Agile isn’t dead. However, I do believe that Agile can relate to a scene in the movie “Dodgeball” where Christine Taylor’s character says “I’m fine, I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.”

Agile is alive and well in organizations where everyone embraces its principles and management style because they enjoy the benefits of an Agile mindset. On the other hand, having witnessed the success of many up-and-coming competitors, other organizations ask “How can we do that?” So they attempt to replicate Google, Airbnb, Facebook, et. al.In truth, those trying to “be agile” predictably fail unless they adopt a truly agile mindset. Microsoft is one of the few companies that has successfully made this change. Unfortunately, Agile is unfairly tainted by the fact that it gets blamed for so many failures. Failures are caused by people who use Agile as a formulaic tool rather than a way of business life. What are some things that make Agile throw up a little?
- Organizations that “go Agile”.
- When management consultants implement agility.
- Anytime business agility is not a way of life.
- When agility is the mission, goal, or objective.
Agile isn’t dead. It has thrived since the 1950’s, long before populism took hold. It will continue to evolve and thrive amongst those who embrace its principles and leadership style. Those organizations will continue to reap its benefits while the disingenuous try to keep up.
